Snow Day at School!

We had a lot of fun playing, painting, and relaxing on our "snow day at school!" We used q-tips to paint snow globes and wrote about the things we would hear, see, smell, and feel if we lived in a snow globe.

Upon returning from music class we found our reading table COVERED with cookies, plates, and another letter!

We had fun decorating cookies, drinking hot chocolate, and even enjoyed a movie!

Have a WONDERFUL winter break! See you in January!

Shape Attributes and More Trouble!

During math we played, "What's my Rule?" using various shapes. They were different colors, sizes, and thick or thin. Friends could ask yes or no questions to narrow down the possibilities such as:

Is it red?
Does it have six sides?
Is it thick?
Is it large?

When we put all of the clues together, we were able to pick up the exact shape I was thinking of! We have some great detectives in here!

When we came to school this morning, Alfie the Elf had created ANOTHER disaster! Our snowflakes were all knocked down and there were purple strings everywhere!

This afternoon we found this note in our classroom with a bunch of golden tickets. I wonder what that means for tomorrow? We will be celebrating our last school day before winter break with a "snow day at school!"

See you tomorrow!

Fifth Grade Reading Buddies

This morning our classroom was COVERED in bows! They were on EVERY chair and all over the cabinets! Our birthday bags were all knocked over as well.....

Today we were invited to Mrs. Englehardt's classroom to read with fifth grade buddies! We read several of our books to them and they even read to us!

Have a great night!

Geo Boards and a Few Mysteries....

This morning we worked with a new tool called a "geo-board." They were square plastic tools with spokes all over them. We used rubber bands to create shapes and pictures on the geo-board.

 Building a hexagon.
 A quilt!

The first letter in our names!
You may have also heard about a HUGE mystery taking place in our classroom. I'll let you see if you can spy the problem in the following photos and just who may be causing all this trouble!

See you tomorrow!

Rope Shapes and a Winter Sing-Along!

Today we reviewed the attributes of many common shapes. In groups of five, we were challenged to create the shapes using one large piece of string. It took some critical thinking to figure out just where everyone should stand and hold onto the string in order to create points.

We also demonstrated shape attributes with our bodies!

This afternoon we enjoyed the Van Allen sing-along concert in the gym and our class winter party!

Have a great weekend!

Calculators!

I showed the class a calculator this morning and the first question was, "Is that a cell phone?"

We had A LOT of fun completing several difficult addition problems using a calculator. You may have to see their skills to believe it!

Partner Share and Mystery Patterns!

In the past few weeks our writing skills have shown great progress! We have become more confident using letter sound knowledge to build unknown words. We've even been writing our own stories! Last week we took some time to do a "partner share" with our journals. The purpose for writing is to share it with others in many different ways: lists, letters, notes, cards, and/or stories. It was fun to share and listen to our friend's writing!

Today we played "pattern mystery" during math. One partner created a pattern and covered up one piece in the middle of the pattern. The other partner had to use their clues to determine what the hidden pattern piece would be if the pattern repeated again and again.

Thanks for a great day!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! We were all a little sleepy today and working hard to get back into a routine.

You would be amazed to see just how much writing progress we continue to make! These friends were writing in response to a book we read in our small group using our sight words for the week, "come" and "me."

We analyzed our weather graph data for the month of November to discover that we had the most sunny weather and the least cloudy weather. On the first day of November we wrote our weather predictions for the month of November. Today we ripped open the envelopes to see if our predictions were correct. Many of us were close!

We also created Gingerbread Boy and Gingerbread Girl calendars today for the month of December!

See you tomorrow!

Ms. Conlee
